NKII BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

NKII BOARD MEETING 8.30am, 30 September 2011 Petane Marae, Ahuriri

 

The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc Board was welcomed and hosted by whanau at Petane Marae and Te Whanganui A Orotu Taiwhenua Board representative Roy Pewhairangi. We acknowledge them for their manaakitanga. 

 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Board acknowledged the various activities and events that have taken place throughout the Kahungunu rohe. Key highlights from the past two months have included:

  • Kahungunu’s overwhelming presence at the Koroneihana in August
  • Support of the Māori Womens’ Welfare League National Conference which was held in Napier.
  • The Waiata Maori Music Awards.
  • The five day Takitimu Festival which included a 500 strong haka powhiri.  A 2 day Takitimu Indigenous Peoples Conference was also held as part of the festival..
  • The Rugby, Haka, Hāngi events which were held in 5 stages across Kahungunu to coincide with the RWC
  • The many wānanga and hui being held namely; fisheries, rongoā, rangatahi, Wai 262, kaumātua, reo, te wero and hauora

BENEFITS TO MEMBERS REPORT  

AQUACULTURE INVESTMENT

The NKII Board signed off the initiation of the TOKM Aquaculture settlement worth $1,500,000

 

INNOVATION CENTRE

Sacha Mc Meeking was appointed to complete a scoping report as part of the feasibility study for the Kahungunu Innovations Centre.  This report will be prepared and presented at the NKII AGM in November.

 

FINANCE REPORT

The endorsement of the financial audited accounts took place in preparation for the NKII AGM reporting to iwi members

 

CONSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION

The NKII Board agreed to umbrella an application to the JR McKenzie Trust on behalf of the Constitutional Transformation Working Group that was established as part of the Iwi Leaders Group Forum.  The Working Group roopu will be Chaired by Moana Jackson.

 

CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAHI

Iwi representatives are looking at creative and innovative ways to address the high statistics of crime and criminal offending in our rohe. 

 

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Jody Hamilton, co-Chairperson of the Kahungunu Economic Committee was introduced to the Board and provided an overview of the mahi the committee are working towards in developing plans for a sustainable future for Kahungunu.  This included looking at strategies around employment and wealth creation for the future.  A report would be provided at the next board meeting by herself and fellow co-chair, Derek Fox.

 

RONGOMAIWAHINE

A Working Group was established to help resolve the issues between Rongomaiwahine Iwi Trust and the NKII Board.
