On Monday 28th August 2006 Ngati Kahungunu will celebrate the official launch of the Kahungunu iwi wide housing strategy. This will be followed by a two year conception, planning and consultation process involving Taiwhenua representation. The launch coincides with the ‘Kahungunu Maranga, Takitimu Karanga’ week long celebrations of Kahungunutanga.
The housing strategy has ten strategic priorities, the first project of which was the highly successful Energy Efficiency Retrofit project. Read on to learn more about this successful project. Following on from the impetus of the retrofit, the first strategic priority and next big project to be undertaken is an iwi wide housing needs assessment.
The needs assessment project in particular will be a huge undertaking and will provide a clear indication of the housing needs in the rohe. Participation is voluntary, but it is important for all whanau to participate regardless of whether or not your housing needs have been met, so that future projects, funding, and programs can be designed and implemented to improve Kahungunu housing standards in the next two years. More information about that will be funneled to whanau at a later date.
A special edition of ‘Hoea Ra’ will be posted to every registered members home and it will provide housing information that may benefit whanau hapu iwi in our search of a healthier future. Some interesting information about home ownership and the current market is also included in this special edition.
The iwi are committed to the strategy as a living document, and are working closely with Taiwhenua and other housing providers in your area to ensure a successful outcome. For any information about the housing strategy and what’s happening in your local area in terms of housing, contact Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc. on 0800 524 864 for assistance.
