HURUMANU

"A Birds Eye View Of Issues Affecting Our Entire Rohe"

HURUMANU is the name of the Fisheries Unit newsletter.

An explanation of our newsletter name

  • Atua over seabirds and landbirds
  • Toroa uta – eagle over the land
  • Toroa tai – albatross over the sea

Seagulls are found over our mountains and our seas and the tītī (muttonbird, sooty shearwater, Puffinus griseus) flies inland and on an annual marathon migration (65,000 km round trip!) across the northern Pacific ocean to Japan, North America (Alaska and California) and back to New Zealand.  These are just a couple of examples of birds that are found on both land and sea.  The name Hurumanu expresses our interest in the fisheries, from the mountain heartland and across the oceans to our horizons, as far as the eye can see, and beyond.  Hurumanu also represents our vision for how we can effectively manage our fisheries by having an overview (“birds eye view”) of issues affecting our entire rohe.
