Protecting Our Environment
Our natural environment provides our physical sustenance as well as being a reminder of tipuna and the spiritual aspect of our existence. The health of our environment has a direct influence on the health of our people. We are charged to preserve and protect our air, water and lands and the resources within for the benefit and survival of ourselves and our mokopuna.
Sustaining our Fisheries
In 2008 a group of Kahungunu representatives came together to form a steering group to oversee the development of a strategic plan for the preservation of ecosystems that sustain Fisheries, Coastal/Marine areas and the management of stocks within them.
Kahungunu Ki Uta, Kahungunu Ki Tai
The steering group was named ‘Kahungunu Ki Uta, Kahungunu Ki Tai’ in recognising our interests from the mountains to sea and out toward Hawaiiki. The Kahungunu ki Uta, Kahungunu ki Tai steering group comprises of representatives from:
- Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated (NKII): The mandated iwi organisation for all aspects of Kahungunu development.
- Kahungunu Asset Holding Company Limited (KAHC): Established by NKII in 2005 to receive and manage the Treaty of Waitangi fisheries settlement assets on behalf of Ngāti Kahungunu.
- The Coastal Hapū Collective (CHC): Coastal Hapū who hold the customary fishing and management rights within their rohe moana and are primarily responsible for kaitiakitanga in their respective areas.
The steering group was supported and assisted by a group of technical advisors including representatives from Te Ohu Kaimoana, Victoria University, Ministry of Fisheries and others. See below a picture of the steering group taken in 2008 at one of their earlier meetings.

Consultation hui with hapū
The steering group carried out a number of consultation hui with hapū throughout the rohe mai i Paritu ki Turakirae to gather issues, develop and discuss solutions. The Kahungunu ki Uta, Kahungunu ki Tai Marine and Freshwater Strategic Plan was launched at the NKII AGM in November 2008.
Marine and Freshwater Fisheries Strategic Plan
Kahungunu ki Uta, Kahungunu ki Tai, Marine and Freshwater Fisheries Strategic Plan (KKUKKT) sets out the aspirations of Kahungunu for the use and management of marine and freshwater fisheries within our rohe. KKUKKT seeks to reintegrate Kahungunu customary non-commercial and customary commercial fisheries. The strategy prioritises local management in accordance with tikanga and supports the mana of hapū.
