BACKGROUND

On Sat 2nd July the Crown and Waitangi Tribunal released the published version of the Flora & Fauna, Cultural and Intellectual Property report known as Wai 262. A few Ngati Kahungunu Iwi representatives traveled to Ahipara to receive the report on behalf of our whanau/hapu/iwi. Iwi representatives have worked through the report and prepared a summary to present to our whanau/hapu/iwi.

WHAT IS THE WAITANGI TRIBUNAL REPORT?

The Waitangi Tribunal Report into the Wai 262 Claim was formally handed over by the Tribunal at Roma Marae in Ahipara on 2 July 2011, twenty years after the claim was filed and ten years after the hearings first began.

WHAT IS THE WAI 262 CLAIM ALL ABOUT?

The Wai 262 claim is in many ways the grandfather of all Waitangi Tribunal claims.  It was the first pan iwi claim and put at issue the whole process of colonisation from the destruction of flora and fauna, both directly and through the destruction of habitats and the introduction of new species as well as the encroachment on traditional authority and efforts to stamp out different forms of Maori knowledge through the Tohunga Suppression Act.

HOW IS NGATI KAHUNGUNU INVOLVED?

Ngati Kahungunu is one of the six claimant iwi who brought the claim to the Tribunal in the early 1990s. The issues raised by Ngati Kahungunu included the Crown’s failure to protect indigenous flora and fauna, Ngati Kahungunu cultural knowledge and Ngati Kahungunu rongoa.  Ngati Kahungunu also complained about the Crown’s failure to allow Ngati Kahungunu to exercise its role as kaitiaki and protect its own flora and fauna, cultural knowledge and rongoa.  A number of iwi members were heavily involved in the claims process including giving evidence at the hearings in 2000, 2001 and 2006.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS HUI A IWI

The purpose of this Hui A Iwi is to allow whanau to come together to have the opportunity to learn and share in understanding what WAI 262 is all about. It is also an opportunity for our Kahungunu representatives to share a summary of the report with our people.
