Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated are so excited about this Hikoi for Health.
You will be aware of the McElnay report, An Indication of Hawkes Bay Peoples Health, placing Hawkes Bay 21 out of 21 regions in health indicator ranking resulting in Hawkes Bay having the ‘worst health status’ in New Zealand
The Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board and the Runanga Hauora approved as our response a ‘Hikoi for Health’ to highlight health inequalities and present the hikoi as a positive opportunity to address the health issues of Maori, in particular, Ngati Kahungunu.
The hikoi for health was a challenge inviting whanau and organised groups to participate.
The Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board and Staff issued a challenge to whanau to develop more active, healthy lifestyles.
The Hikoi for health involved teams of 5 to 10 people, setting goals and monitoring the amount of walking each team member does with a collective goal for each team to walk 515 kilometers over a period of up to 40 days.
What was the criteria?
-
Each team had at least 5 and not more than 10 members.
-
Each team had to be keen to complete the challenge.
-
Each team nominated a team co-ordinator and a team motivator
-
Each team chose a name and a health message to promote. You might want to seek a sponsor for your team.
-
Each team completed the registration form and submitted it to the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office.
How did it work?
The hikoi was based on monitoring and measuring the amount of steps and distance team members walk each day. On registration teams were issued a ‘Hikoi pack’ that will include kaupapa, pedometers, individual record cards, a team recording chart, contact details of hikoi co-ordinator-and other information. Each team set their goals and self monitored, and reported back to the Hikoi co-ordinator via email or 0800 phone each day.
Walk the Talk T shirts can still be purchased by teams or individuals from the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office.
When was the hikoi?
The hikoi was launched with a mass walk on 3 May 2005. This day marked the anniversary of the Ngati Kahungunu Hikoi 2004, foreshore and seabed. The hikoi finished on June 11th, with the presentation of Certificates and awarding prizes to teams.
Why is Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated promoting the hikoi?
To highlight health inequalities and present the hikoi as a positive opportunity to address the health issues of Maori in the region, and the ‘worst health status’ of the Hawkes Bay district
