Kahungunu 2026 - Economically Strong


The settlement of all Ngati Kahungunu Treaty Claims and return or reclamation of Ngati Kahungunu whenua and taonga (awa, moana, ngahere,) will form the foundation of our economic revival.

Ngati Kahungunu will remain involved in the traditional areas of economic activity of fisheries and farming while embracing technology and business opportunities to have a presence across all areas of economic activity within our rohe.

Fisheries:

  • Aquaculture (paua, mussels) - dominant in the industry and to the fore with technological advancements.
  • Fresh water fisheries established in Eels, fresh water koura etc.
  • Sustainable fishery with clean, high quality water.
  • Training for industry through Kahungunu.
  • World Wide Distribution through enhanced relationships with other nations.
  • Franchised kaimoana shops.

Farming and horticulture:

  • Own farms, orchards, vineyards, gardens and forests.
  • Organic and GE free.

Tourism and hospitality:

  • Fishery estate - relationship between traditional awa/moana, tikanga and kai.

On the marae:

  • Each marae has own economic base
  • Each marae has ability to provide own services
