Whakapapa & Tikanga o Tangaroa
Genealogy
and relationship with the sea
All
our fisheries have a whakapapa - genealogy. Tangaroa
is the most famous of nga Atua (the Gods) with regard
to fisheries but there are 12 other Atua, teina (younger
siblings) of Tangaroa that also have fisheries functions.
To support these functions there are Takitimu Whakatauaki
(proverb), Mahi o nga Tipuna (history) and karakia
(prayers) that create a whariki (basis) for our
current fisheries activities.
