Iwi Activities - Customary Fisheries

The Treaty of Waitangi (Fisheries Claims) Settlement Act 1992 "The Settlement Act" radically affected Maori Customary Fisheries Rights. It created a distinction between customary and commercial fisheries, which were previously viewed as non-separable.

From The Settlement Act emerged the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998. These regulations include the establishment of Mataitai Reserves, Taiapure, Rahui and other Maori practices that can be managed and controlled by local whanau and hapu. The regulations also allow for customary take and local kaitiaki (managers).

After consultation, Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has asked the Ministry of Fisheries to Gazette that the iwi will manage the entire coastline out to the 200 mile limit, with the respective hapu managing the areas within the 12 mile limit.
