Eels
are a cultural icon to Ngati Kahungunu. Eels entered the Quota
Management System (QMS) in October 2004. Ngati Kahungunu will
receive approximately 20 ton. A NIWA report suggests that
the long fin eel population will disappear in the next 20
years unless positive enhancement action is taken now. 75%
of long fin eel stocks have disappeared in the last 20 years.
