Iwi Activities - Commercial Fishing

Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has been forced to limit its fishing opportunities to Annual Catch Entitlement (ACE) rounds from Te Ohu Kai Moana. Our share of the Te Ohu Kai Moana asset is worth approximately $50 million. Along with Ngai Tahu, Ngai Tamanuhiri, and Hauraki we have a joint venture group called ECI (East Coast Iwi). ECI is the 8th or 9th top ACE holder in the country.

Commercial Fishing is defined as: "Taking fish for sale within New Zealand or within New Zealand fishing waters".

Current

Sealords have offered (ECI) a lucrative deal on our Hoki and other deep sea ACE. Inshore fisheries are keenly sought after each season. Bill Blake, D Karauria and N Tomoana are the current fisheries delegates.

Crayfish

Our crayfish ACE has been collectivised to be fished by Kahungunu fisherman and we aim to receive premium prices. Proceeds are distributed to Taiwhenua.
