Iwi Activities - Treaty Tribes

In 1994 Ngati Kahungunu, Ngai Tahu, Tamanuhiri, Moriori, Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui, Ngati Porou, Taranaki Iwi and Ngati Wai called a hui to discuss an allocation model for the fisheries assets. It was agreed that the basis of allocation should be Mana Moana - Mana Whenua. That is those who have mana over the whenua should have the same authority over the fishing resources of the coast. Treaty Tribes has been pursuing this allocation model ever since.

Current members are Ngai Tahu, Hauraki, Ngati Kahungunu, Tamanuhiri and Ngati Tama. There are 36 associate members. We successfully defended the Privy Council Case "What is an Iwi" in London. We have defended and won every legal challenge so far and are still no closer to the fisheries assets returning to Ngati Kahungunu. Political lobbying is currently being undertaken and we are looking to a political solution rather than a legal solution. The threat of a new Maori Political Party has accelerated dialogue with this government.
