Economically Strong

The settlement of all Ngāti Kahungunu Treaty Claims and return or reclamation of Ngāti Kahungunu whenua and taonga (awa, moana, ngahere,) will form the foundation of our economic revival. 

Ngāti Kahungunu will remain involved in the traditional areas of economic activity of fisheries and farming while embracing technology and business opportunities to have a presence across all areas of economic activity within our rohe.

 

Fisheries:

  • Aquaculture (pāua, mussels) - dominant in the industry and to the fore with technological advancements.

  • Fresh water fisheries established in Eels, fresh water kōura etc.

  • Sustainable fishery with clean, high quality water.

  • Training for industry through Kahungunu. 

  • World Wide Distribution through enhanced relationships with other nations.

  • Franchised kaimoana shops.

 

Farming and horticulture:

  • Own farms, orchards, vineyards, gardens and forests.

  • Organic and GE free.

 

Tourism and hospitality:

  • Fishery estate - relationship between traditional awa/moana, tikanga and kai.

 

On the marae:

  • Each marae has own economic base

  • Each marae has ability to provide own services

 

Research and Development

  • Research unit

  • Kahungunu Scientists and laboratory ~ productivity research and other projects
