Iwi Scholarship Applications open 5 February 2022

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated acknowledges that education is the key to personal, whānau, hapū and iwi development.  For this reason the iwi board has allocated $40,000 to support Ngāti Kahungunu tertiary students’ toward their educational achievements.

The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board has identified strategic areas of priority for academic research, scholarship, and internship in 2022.

Te Reo and Tikanga Māori, Fisheries and Resource Management/Environmental Science, Health & Wellbeing and Information and Communication Technology

These strategic areas support the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Vision 2026 and Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated strategic direction and operations. The purpose of the education scholarship is to:

  • To provide financial benefits and work experience to Ngāti Kahungunu tertiary students.

  • To encourage and recognise the pursuit of academic excellence, knowledge and qualifications by Ngāti Kahungunu tauira.

  • To support the realisation of the Ngāti Kahungunu Strategic Vision 2026, and develop the capacity and capability of the Ngāti Kahungunu workforce for future generations.

There are two kinds of scholarships – General and Research. The General Scholarships are funded from a pool of $25,000.  The maximum amount awarded is $500, up to a maximum of 50 recipients. There are three Research Scholarships worth ($5000). These are offered to full-time Ngāti Kahungunu tertiary post-graduate students undertaking research.

We also offer internships to Ngāti Kahungunu students to join the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office.  Interns will participate in research and work relevant to their studies and skills and contribute to iwi development.

Last year the organisation supported 95 students with an educatation scholarship. 92 recipients received a General Scholarship worth $500 and 3 recipients received a Research Scholarship worth $5,000.
