Ngāti Kahungunu Virtual Matariki Concert
Friday 12 June 2020, 6-8pm
Tēnā koutou katoa e te iwi.
In June-July each year Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated celebrates Matariki, the Māori new year. Matariki or Pleiades, is commonly known as a group of stars that appear on the eastern horizon in the pre-dawn sky from late May to late July each year. The first sign of the new moon heralds the arrival of Matariki and signals a time of thanksgiving to welcome the new year planting season with feasting, fun, and festivity.
Over the years Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has held community events throughout the Kahungunu rohe, to celebrate Matariki. Festivals would take place every weekend in June into July at each Taiwhenua district throughout the Kahungunu rohe and in the past two years we have held an event in Wainuiomata. Whānau would dress up in their warm clothes and woolly hats and leave their nice warm fireplaces to attend a Matariki event in their community. In droves whānau would come out to enjoy a hot kai - hangi, paua or whitebait fritters, hot fry bread with real butter, hot bacon bone soup, mini donuts, homemade steak and egg sandwiches, seafood chowder, hot dogs and chips, fresh Māori bread, Barbeque Polynesian styles - you name it, everything hot and yum you can think of eating on a cool wintery night would be at these festivals. Entertainment of local whānau members would touch the hearts of the nannies and parents as their children would bravely take the stage to perform their favourite kapa haka items. Teenagers dancing to booming music as the crowd hovers around with their treats in hand. And not to forget the finale of the night - a spectacular display of fireworks would shower the skies to the coordinated sound of majestic music penetrating your heart as an overwhelming feeling of joy would embrace your family circle as you would unitedly look heavenward in awe of the beauty and feelings of community peace and oneness. Absolutely stunning!
This year we want to celebrate Matariki again and touch the hearts and minds of you, our whānau. We want you to feel excited and connected and involved in this years Matariki, just like years gone by. We need you to participate to make this work. Over the month of April and possibly May - all of us have had to stay home and be safe in our bubble. During this time we have all learned a lot about ourselves and our whānau. Now is the time to share your whānau bubble with the iwi. We want you to enjoy Matariki and #sharethelightkahungunu.
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated event manager Te Rangi Huata and his team have come up with a really good idea and this year for Matariki, we are hosting our very first Virtual Matariki Event. Ok, here's how it works. We have a number of lead in weekly competitions. Instructions are given on the posters below. ENJOY whānau. Participate and keep an eye on our facebook for all our weekly winners.
