To improve the experience for all people who participate in the District and Family Court system, by partnering with Iwi.

Our Aspiration

What is Te Ao Mārama

Te Ao Mārama is a vision to reimagine the District and Family Court in Te Matau-a-Māui. We have the chance to improve the experience for all people who take part in the court system, including those who have been harmed along with their whānau.

Working together for better success

  • In August 2022 Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc and Te Tāhū o te Ture | Ministry of Justice partnered to develop Te Ao Mārama for Napier and Hastings District Court locations.

We heard the voices of our whānau

  • We listened to our whānau to gain insight into their experience with the District and Family Court to assist us in the way we move forward.

  • We wanted these changes within the Courts to lead to a more positive outcome for whānau and our future mokopuna

Te Ao Mārama scope:

  • The integration of strategies from current therapeutic courts;

  • Changes to the information and training that court staff receive;

  • Freedom to change processes, environments, language, signage, and systems within the District and Family Court

In September 2023, we engaged with whānau and listened to their stories. We gathered more than 1000 stories in the engagements and produced a report called 'Te Ao Mārama ki te Matau-a-Māui - The Undiluted Voices of Whānau'. This report elevates the voices of whānau as an anchor for realising Te Ao Mārama within Napier and Hastings. The best way for the Government to hear about the impacts of the justice system is to hear it directly from whānau about their experiences. He taonga te kōrero nei.

Ministry of Justice Vision

“Ka kuhu au ki te ture, hei matua mō te pani”
I seek refuge in the law as a parent for the oppressed and impoverished.

Our Aspiration

A space that enables whānau to move from
“Te Ao Tara Aitu – the world of calamity,” to a space of “Ki Te Ara Mātua – a pathway of clarity.”
