Celebrating 20 Years of Whānau, Sport and Connection
This year marks a very special milestone for Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated as we celebrate the 20th AGM Pā Sports at Splash Planet.
For two decades, the AGM Pā Sports has brought whānau together from across the Ngāti Kahungunu rohe for a day of whakawhanaungatanga, friendly competition, laughter, kai and celebration.
What began as an opportunity to bring some fun and whānau activities alongside our Annual General Meeting has grown into one of our much-loved annual iwi events. From Wairarapa through to Wairoa, whānau come together to reconnect, represent their marae, enjoy the sports and activities, and spend a great day together.
AGM Hui
Our Annual General Meeting remains an important part of the day, providing iwi members with an opportunity to hear about the mahi of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated, ask questions and participate in kōrero about the direction of our iwi.
As we look ahead, the aspirations of our whānau, kaumātua and rangatahi continue to guide us.
KAHUNGUNU2050, our long-term vision for Ngāti Kahungunu, provides a pathway for the future, grounded in whakapapa, kaupapa Māori and the aspirations we hold for our mokopuna.
Splash Planet
One of the highlights of AGM Pā Sports continues to be seeing hundreds of our whānau enjoying Splash Planet together. From the moment the gates open, the park comes alive with tamariki, mokopuna, parents and kaumātua enjoying the pools, rides, sunshine and music.
There is something special about looking across Splash Planet and seeing generations of Kahungunu whānau simply enjoying being together. That has always been at the heart of AGM Pā Sports.
Pā Sports
Of course, there is also some serious marae pride on the line! Over the years our sports programme has included Kiddies Sports, Touch, Volleyball, Netball, Kī-o-Rahi, Pickleball, Basketball and other activities, with marae competing against marae for the honour of becoming our AGM Pā Sports champions.
And we haven't forgotten our competitive kaumātua and card players! Euchre has become another favourite part of the day. The prizes might sometimes bring a few laughs, but anyone who has sat around those tables knows – it's definitely about the win!
Kai, Music and Whanaungatanga
AGM Pā Sports has always been about sharing, caring and giving. Kai and water are available throughout the day, music keeps the atmosphere pumping, and our karaoke stage gives whānau from throughout the rohe an opportunity to share their talents.
Whether you are competing for your marae, singing a waiata, watching the tamariki play, catching up with whānau you haven't seen for a while, attending the AGM or simply relaxing beside the pools, there is something for everyone.
Twenty years on, the kaupapa remains the same – bringing our people together.
This year we celebrate 20 years of AGM Pā Sports, 20 years of whanaungatanga, and 20 years of creating memories together as Ngāti Kahungunu.
