KAHUNGUNU 2050 - 25 YEAR VISION

This page is for the 'Te Ara Toiora' Planning Day, Thursday 22 January 2026

Purpose - To help understand the vision and link our mahi to the vision.

CONNECTING OUR HEARTS, NOT JUST OUR MINDS

  • Who are you doing this mahi for?

  • What do you want our mokopuna to inherit from us and our mahi?

“KAHUNGUNU 2050 isn’t a plan on paper. It’s the world our mokopuna will grow up in. It's a living, breathing future shaped by the aroha, choices, and courage of every one of us. Each of us holds a thread, and together we weave the cloak they will stand inside.”

WHAT WEAVES US

  • It's not necessarily our jobs; I believe it's our values and what we believe

  • What are some of our values?

  • Why are you here working for NKII? What brought you here?

  • What inspires you? "The need to be a good tipuna for future mokopuna" I practice on my nephews and niece! - Patrick Hape

VISION - I had an experience this week that reminded me of Vision and Balance - don't look too far, yet don't forget to look forward, keeping an eye on your goal.

  • What does the future look like?

  • Where are the curves and potholes?

  • Being Careful vs Being Māori - what does that mean to you?

  • We won't always see the potholes, but we can maintain our course as we assess and continue to move forward.

IMAGINE -

Imagine 2050 - what does that look like?

  • A thriving iwi economy where whānau have choices, not barriers

  • A confident, connected Ngāti Kahungunu whānau

  • Healthy whenua, healthy wai, healthy people, a region we are proud to hand on

WHAT'S COMING TO YOUR MIND?

  • Where do you see yourself in 2050?

  • What part of this future can you influence?

  • What's one thing you can do this year that moves us toward the 2050 vision?

WE'RE NOT JUST WORKING FOR TODAY - WE ARE BUILDING A LEGACY

  • Legacies are built by connected people, moving with one heartbeat.

  • Today, you will discuss your own roles within your teams and then align your goals with the priorities of the vision together.

  • “Today is about shaping the legacy we want to leave.

  • These hui should happen regularly so we can stay aligned, track our progress, and spot any potholes before they slow us down.

  • What are some potholes? That's another hui....

KAHUNGUNU 2050 is about connection to each other, to our whenua, and to the future we are responsible for.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is a Mandated Iwi Organisation/Authority. Ngāti Kahungunu is the third largest iwi.  Geographically the tribe has the second longest coastline in the country from Paritū in the North to Turakirae in the South. Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated maintains an independent position to provide research, advice and advocate for the interests, rights, values, beliefs and practices of Ngāti Kahungunu alongside our whānau and hapū. Our mission is to enhance the mana and well-being of Ngāti Kahungunu.

We are not a service provider. The people who deliver services to our whānau are our Taiwhenua and our Māori Providers. They are our hands and feet - present on the ground, walking alongside the very people we exist to serve. Our role at NKII is to support, strengthen, and advocate for our providers so they can continue their vital mahi with confidence, resourcing, and unity.

Ngāti Kahungunu 25-Year Vision: KAHUNGUNU 2050

Our manifestation "E tū Kahungunu! Strong, sovereign and united – for our whenua, our whānau, and our future."

By the year 2050, Ngāti Kahungunu will be a flourishing, self-determined iwi, intergenerationally wealthy in identity, knowledge, and wellbeing. We will live connected to our whenua, exercising mana motuhake across our rohe, and guiding our mokopuna to thrive in both te Ao Māori and te Ao hurihuri (the ever changing world)

Our whānau will live in warm, sustainable homes on their papakainga whenua. Our rangatahi will lead confidently with strong cultural roots, fluent in Te Reo Māori, and contributing in every sector: science, health, law, technology, and the arts. Our economy will reflect the values of our tīpuna—circular, collective, and regenerative. We will have our own banking systems, health institutions, and education centres. Our people will lead globally, engage politically, and trade internationally while upholding whakapapa and tikanga.Through strong iwi leadership, we will unify our hapū, Taiwhenua, and whānau. We will reassert hapū sovereignty, honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and shape our own future through authentic, inclusive governance.

Our Vision - 'Ki te whaiao, ki te ao mārama The continuous pursuit of excellence'

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated (NKII) recognises the need to review its objectives and align its strategies with the needs of whānau & hapū. We will honour the voice of our people for our people to flourish.
