Pa Wars Basketball – Competition Rules
1. Game Format
5 v 5 competition
Each team must have 5 players on the court at all times.
At least one wahine must be on court for each team at all times.
Teams may have additional players on their bench.
2. Wahine Rule
Male players can defend wahine players.
Male players cannot block a wahine player’s shot.
Players are expected to play fairly and respectfully at all times.
Deliberate attempts to take advantage of this rule may result in a foul or other penalty at the referee’s discretion.
3. Game Timing
Games will be played using a running clock.
The length of each game will depend on the number of teams entered.
The final game times and format will be confirmed once registrations close.
4. Competition Format
The competition will be played as pool play.
Teams will be placed into pools depending on the number of entries.
Teams will play against other teams within their pool.
Pool standings will determine the crossover match-ups.
5. Crossover Finals
The final games will be crossovers between the pools.
For example, with two pools:
1st Pool A vs 1st Pool B
2nd Pool A vs 2nd Pool B
3rd Pool A vs 3rd Pool B
4th Pool A vs 4th Pool B
This gives every team a final crossover game based on their finishing position in their pool.
6. General Rules
Standard basketball rules apply unless specifically changed by the Pa Wars rules.
Referee decisions are final.
Teams are expected to show mana, respect and sportsmanship to opponents, referees, organisers and spectators.
Any disputes or issues should be raised with the tournament organisers rather than during the game.
Pa Wars is about whānau, competition, fun and representing your pā/marae with pride!
