Ngāti Walkabout

Ngahiwi Tomoana has been the longest serving chairman for any iwi in Aotearoa. His chairmanship of the Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board started in 1996 and ended after 26 years when new Chairman Bayden Barber won the 2022 triennial election. Ngahiwi Tomoana holds a great deal of historical knowledge and as an organisation, we strive to capture this knowledge to hold and carefully share as a taonga and record of modern Kahungunu, the ups, and downs, and turnarounds.

Tihei Kahungunu is an 8-12 page tabloid that features a dedicated Māori voice in mainstream media. Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated and Hawke’s Bay Today launched this initiative in June 2015, an initiative brought to life by Andrew Austin former HBToday Chief Editor and Ngahiwi Tomoana. Tihei Kahungunu came about to build on our strategy to celebrate Kahungunu success and share this information with the wider public. Click on the link below to view editions of Tihei Kahungunu.

In 2021, leading into our 100th edition of Tihei Kahungunu, we have introduced Pā mai tō reo! a one-page chronicle of the journeys of Te Waka Takitimu and its origins from Te Moananui a Kiwa and its steady migration over 300 years to its eventual resting place in Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa.  Previous to the Takitimu voyage, however, we can trace our whakapapa through Polynesia into Melanesia through Micronesia into Austronesia from our origins in Asia. Published copies of these writings are kept on this website. Click on the link below to view some of our publications.

In 2022, following his release from his long term position as chairman, Ngahiwi was mandated by the 'National Iwi Chairs Forum" as Lead for Te Aratini & Trade. Following the impressive Aotearoa presence at the 2021 World Expo in Dubai, Ngahiwi is now preparing for the 2025 World Expo being held in Osaka, Japan. We keep a record of his updates so everyone and anyone can view progress reports. Click on 'Updates & Reports' to view his updates.

Ngahiwi Tomoana is an extremely great writer and for years we have strived to collate and publish his great depth of knowledge and experience into pages that tell the stories of our iwi - the last 26 years, the last 50 years, the last 100 years, the last 1000 years. We look back to see our future, and we learn about our future by understanding our past. Exclusive electonic copies or his book - an autobiography of Ngahiwi's life as the iwi chair is available on request. Contact Ruth Wong - ruth@kahungunu.iwi.nz

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated has embraced Ngahiwi's private capture of information to support our desire to share who we are. We have adopted Ngahiwi as our Kahungunu Reporter At Large. We get to share his stories, and we all get a glimpse from the inside of his mind.

The iwi celebrated a farewell for Ngahiwi Tomoana on 29 July 2022. While he no longer works in the tari, energising our hearts and minds with fresh innovation and incredible vision for an ever-inspiring future, we continue to be inspired to maintain encouraging and positive communications with his help as our very own Kahungunu Reporter At Large.
